Business development is one of those functions where a natural "talent" can prove even more important than experience. A great biz-dev executive will be creative, analytical, self-motivated, great at building relationships and be able to think strategically and imaginatively, about how business product, positioning and ultimately revenue can be impacted by key partnerships. As an engineer you can test/practice your biz-dev abilities by thinking about any technology partnerships your company could pursue to enhance/augment it's product or that make your product roadmap more robust or achievable. Propose these ideas to your team and offer to act as lead on reaching out to that prospective partner to discuss the opportunity to integrate your products. Reply

I think of this role as a relationship manager. Biz development managers identify potential clients, and "date" them. They try to gain a better understanding of their pain points - the issues that cause them difficulty and keep them from accomplishing their goals and reaching their potential - and identify strategies to communicate how their company can help the client to overcome the obstacles. Is their ultimate job to find clients and convert them to sales? Yes, but there is a lot more to the role. One has to understand all aspect of business and be able to formulate relationships with individuals that ultimately allow them to become trusted confidantes and advisors who are helping provide solutions to business issues. It totally depends on the persons interest as both are good fields and partly interrelated. Digital marketing is done to generate leads and inquiries for business, online reputation management, customer care etc. Needs skills of marketing, for graphics, website basic structure, google and search engine knowledge, competitor analysis and it is better if you know thoroughly about your products and needs of customer. While business development is starting from generating leads, contact with lead, full fill their requirements through mails and quotes, follow ups, getting orders, fullfill order, get payments done, after sales followups and then asking feedback and new orders. So business development is few step ahed of digital marketing. Digital marketing is just stops upto leads generation or online promotion but business development is upto end of fullfiling whole cycle of sales and marketing. Reply

I have already faced this problem before I got a job as Business development Executive. Previously I was Android developer. It's an advantage for me and other who belong to IT firm as we can better understand the technology and client's requirement as well as other development issues. I think when you have good communication to introduce/explain your company services as well as what client need and how you provide better than other company/competitors then definitely you can see your bright career in IT business field. I have several suggestions to grow up your career in Business development like, you need to watch some Business/Marketing online video on Youtube.comchannel and some of the paid video channels are available for how to grow your Skills in Business Development. In short, I would like to say about using some of the Business developmenttactics which will you help to start your initial Business career like 1) Email Campaigning 2) Digital Marketing 3) Biding 4) Cold calling end more.Hope this will help you.
